He was a freedom fighter and the first non-Congress party Prime Minister of
India. He is the only Indian to receive the highest civilian awards
from both India and Pakistan and, namely the Bharat Ratna and Nishaan-e-Pakistan.

Was an Indian social activist and a pioneer of rural development. Under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi he settled in 1947 in the backward village of Uruli Kanchan near Pune, Maharashtra, to begin a programme of rural development. He received the 1982 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service, sometimes called Asia's Nobel Prize. |
